Say No To PPT (Part 2)

Read Part 1

Here's what our announcement loop looks like on Sunday morning. I went ahead and built this in PPT, and saved it as a movie, which I've never done before, so I don't know why the shadow looks so pixilated. But, you'll get the basic idea.

Normally there's a little more flow between graphics, but we're using some Christmas graphics for the season.

Oh, crap!

Now that I've watched it, I see there is some old stuff in there as well...oh well.

and, now that I've watched it, you can't even tell that the shadow is pixilated cause the video quality is reduced anyway...

and those are reasons why I hate PPT.

It doesn't look horrible. I mean, you lost quality because you converted it to a video but at church you could just leave it on PPT.

Powerpoint definitely is not the best option for presentations and probably 95% of the extras PPT comes with are super cheesy but someone who knows what they're doing go do a decent job with it. It works great for business or even classroom presentations (college or school).

For church. . .there's better stuff out there.

What I didn't get from part 1 & 2 is exactly what about using clipart and cheesy transitions that isn't relevant? I agree that these things are about 10 years behind the times, but what is relevant in church presentations?

you're right...somebody who know's what they're doing can make PPT work well. Unfortunately, very few of those people apparently go to church...

PPT becomes bad when somebody goes crazy with it. We need to think of our announcements as commercials. The bad clipart, funky fonts and colors, and crazy animations and transitions that you see in most church commercials just don't match up with what you'll see outside of the church.

Most of the new presentation software out today focuses more on streamlining things and making video stuff more simple. ProPresenter & MediaShout are the two that I've worked with, and both do a great job of not giving a person too many options with which to go crazy.

I completely agree with both of these two posts you've made. It's something I'm always preaching to our church media team. I just don't get how folks don't realize how cheesy stuff looks.

The video from you're church was pretty good; Though I did wonder if everything happened it "da big lobby!" :D

it is a BIG lobby...

It's not so much an issue of relevance as it is an issue of excellence.
And since we don't have a little lobby, too, why a big lobby?

And I think that excellence is relevant. I can't remember the last time I watched a secular concert (live or on tv) that was just poor quality (outside of the CMA's or Maroon 5...seriously), or saw a really poor quality tv commercial (poor = low quality).
